A woman found out to engage deeply in the trafficking of children has been arrested by the police in the Aba area of Abia State.

Operatives of Abia State Police Command have arrested a child trafficking syndicate who operates a baby factory at No. 2, St. Bridget Road, Aba, the commercial nerve centre of Abia State, Punch reports.

It was gathered that the command got information that one Ifeanyi Agbasonu and his wife, Oluchi Agbasonu, were operating a baby factory in the commercial town and sent a team of detectives to investigate the couple.

It was gathered that on arrival at the scene, Ifeanyi Agbasonu had escaped, but his wife was arrested and two pregnant women, Esther Odum and Ebere Ejimadu, all from Imo State, were rescued from their residence.

The Abia State Commissioner of Police, Adeyele Oyabade, has confirmed the incident and added that the case was currently under investigation.

Oyebade explained that the suspects would be prosecuted after the investigation.

Confessing to the crime, Mrs. Agbasonu said her husband was a trained homeopathic doctor and added that the two pregnant women were in their house to be treated of infectious diseases.

She said, “I am a trader. When I came back from the market on Monday, I saw these two women in our house and I asked my husband what they were doing in our house; he told me they came to take treatment from him.

“But on Friday, I saw the police around my house and they told me that I was under arrest; that was how I came here. My husband had travelled to buy some drugs for their treatment.”

Meanwhile, the pregnant women claimed to have gone to the suspect Agbasonu, who is now at large for treatment.

Also, Odum said, “I am from Owerri in Imo State and somebody introduced me to the doctor for him to treat me. When I got there, the man said he would take me to his hospital and give me medicine that would help me out. I went on Wednesday, but I was arrested on Friday.”

In her remark, Ejimadu said she arrived at the doctor’s house on Monday from Port Harcourt, where she resides with her aunty.

According to her, “I went to a hospital in Port Harcourt and they told me that I have an infection. One woman at the hospital advised me to take native medicine to treat the infection.

“Then my aunty said that she knew a doctor that treats infection well and that was how we came to Aba.

“When I arrived, the man said that I would stay in his house for treatment and return to Port Harcourt on Sunday, but we were arrested on Friday.”
