An official of the Super Eagles national team told newsmen that the Chelsea midfielder will be retaining the position he played at the Rio Olympics.
In a bid to get out the most from him, new Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has revealed that Chelsea midfielder, John Obi Mikel, was be given a free role in the Nigerian football national team.
The midfielder displayed his true potential when he played in an attacking position in the men’s football category at the recently concluded Rio Olympics hosted by Brazil.
This was courtesy team coach, Samson Siasia, who managed to grab a bronze medal, Nigeria’s only accomplishment in the Olympic games.
On his part, Mikel scored a goal and created four assists in the competition.
Speaking concerning the midfielder’s expected role in the Super Eagles team, a source told African Football on Thursday, September 1, 2016, that the team captain will not be playing in a holding midfield position.
“Mikel will play in an attacking position under the new coach, not the holding midfield role he plays for his club", the official said.
