A social media user named Henry Onwe resident in the South-south region of Nigeria has publicized the deplorable state of the strategic Itu road in the Cross-River area of the South-south.
Cynics believe Nigeria is far from industrialization and development of the local economy as President Muhammadu Buhari advocates, due to the absence of an enabling ground such as good roads and others to boost commercial activities between regions in Nigeria towards efficiency.
A strong case in hand is the sorry state of the popular Itu federal highway that links Calabar, Cross River to the entire South West and South-eastern part of the country that has become a death trap for motorists, causing accidents and immobilizing vehicles due to the massive potholes and its swampy nature.
A young man named Henry Onwe who recently toured the region and took disturbing pictures has flooded Facebook with his awful experience.
He is championing a cause to bring the state of the road to the attention of appropriate government ministries, agencies and departments such as Federal Road Maintenance Agency, FERMA, the honourable Minister of Works, Power and Housing in the person of Babatunde Raji Fashola to help ameliorate the hardship faced by the road users.
Read an excerpt from him below:
“This is Calabar – Itu road a Federal Government road linking Uyo, Aba and Calabar, there has been several calls from concerned Nigerians to the Government for help, yet we are still waiting for the help. While waiting for the help, suffering is becoming unbearable, we are spending 7 hours or days on a journey that is supposed to take 2 hours. There is an organisation called FERMA, can’t they reclaim this worst portions of the road??????????
“We are screaming for help louder than ever. God hear our prayers”
Another resident, Ukim Victor also confirmed the state of the abandoned road which holds the key to an economic breakthough in the region of tarred up to standard.
