Onitsha—Some members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam under the aegis of concerned members of ASUU, yesterday, dissociated themselves from the activities of the union leadership led by Mr Emeka Nwabunnia that last week announced vacancy in the position of the Vice Chancellor.
Last week, the Nwabunnia-led ASUU executive at a press conference called on the state governor to appoint an acting Vice Chancellor before September 4, 2016, when the incumbent Vice Chancellor, Prof. Fidelis Okafor’s tenure would expire.
Addressing a press conference in the institution, the spokesman of the group,Dr Pascal Oguno condemned the action of the ASUU Chairman and his Secretary,Odum Mbanefo on the grounds that the union had no power to announce vacancy for the position of the Vice-Chancellor.
According to him, since there was no properly constituted governing council, it was the prerogative of the visitor (Governor) to announce vacancy of the position of the Vice-Chancellor.
He said the action of the Chairman and the Secretary was tantamount to causing crisis in the institution.”ASUU has acted ultra vires by announcing vacancy for the Vice-Chancellor position and it is embarrassing and an unethical behavior to write a letter to the governor and circulate same to persons who are not members of the university.”
Oguno urged members of the union not be deceived and pushed into taking illegal actions not in line with the law establishing the university and the union constitution because of personal interest of a few individuals in the executive.
