UMUAHIA—Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain and former personal assistant to Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Mr Ben Onyechere, has described the alleged plot to remove Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, as not only an inordinate ambition but an abuse of democratic norms and violation of voters’ franchise.
Onyechere in a chat with newsmen in Umuahia, yesterday, said the move was transferred aggression by ex-Governor T.A. Orji’s political enemies who felt they could get at him by digging up frivolities in order to upturn a people- oriented mandate.
His words: “This conspiracy which was well rehearsed and well funded was geared towards destabilizing governance which was the reason they took the suicidal risk of invading the government lodge with their thugs.
“The steps they took are enough indication that they are being backed by high forces, otherwise, they should have been charged with treason and prosecuted by the Federal Government and Inspector General of Police.
“It is important to prosecute them to serve as a deterrent for future occurrence. If we must remind ourselves of the furore generated by the kidnapping of former Governor Chris Ngige by strong forces, it is easy to decipher that such an attack on democracy cannot be carried out without the knowledge of powers that be, more so, that they are keeping mute in the face of attempted kidnapping of the governor.”
He added that the battle against Ikpeazu by a few business moguls from the state and their friends, though expected in a situation where major political shift occurred, should also serve as a case study for bookmakers.
