“The committee was impressed with Mr. Rohr’s profile and current activities for the German Football Federation (DFB), so we invited him to Nigeria for exhaustive deliberations,” said Ahmed Yusuf Fresh, vice chairman of the technical committee.

“He was very positive, showed great interest in the job and is ready and willing to live in Nigeria. He is also willing to work with indigenous Nigerian coaches and with the committee, and believes the Super Eagles can qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which is very important to the NFF.”

Rohr, 63, played for Bordeaux in France as a defender and later took them to the UEFA Cup final in 1996 as coach, losing to Bayern Munich.

He also coached Nantes and top Tunisian club Etoile du Sahel before managing the national teams of Gabon, Niger and Burkina Faso.

Currently working for the German FA, he was shortlisted for the job of head coach of Guinea only last month.

Fresh added that the NFF would draft a contract and that final negotiations with Rohr would take place “in the following days.”

Nigeria have been drawn in the same group as Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

They go to Zambia on October 3.
