Lean not on your own understanding

By Johnson Omomadia

Since the creation of man, man has always wanted to have things his own way. Often, he feels, his ways are the best. Sometimes no matter how well you try to get him to understand the truth (JN 17:17), man will still tell you that he knows best.

What man often fails to understand is that, he is a created being, created by someone greater than him. The simple question now is; can the creature be greater than the creator? If your answer is no, then why spend your quality time leaning on your own understanding as opposed to trusting in God, who is your maker and knows the best for you.

When you lean on your own understanding, you keep God out of your activities. The bible says, draw nigh to God and He will draw nigh to you. You cannot lean on your understanding and still draw nigh to God. Right from bible days till today, men who have opted to lean on their understanding have found out that it usually leads to corruption or death at the end of the day.

Remember you can not be wiser than God. I dare to say to you that the foolishness of God is wiser than the wisest man. No wonder God said my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts ( Isaiah 55:8-9).

Our main text in Prov. 3:5, says “trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding”. Now, in the book of Acts 27, Apostle Paul, was been taken to stand trail in Rome. As they were going, He perceived by the Spirit of God that there will be dangers ahead.

He warned the captains of the ship of the situation ahead, but the captain believing in his own wisdom laughed at Apostle Paul and questioned Paul’s knowledge about sea route. The captain opted to lean on his own understanding instead of trusting in the word of God’s Apostle. This is often the problem with people today. They always think that they know better than God, whereas, their ability is highly limited.

No sooner they carried on in their journey that they encountered a major problem. The bible says  in VS 14-20, “ but not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon. And when the ship was caught and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive. And running into a certain Island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat; which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding  the ship; And fearing lest they should fall into the quicksand’s, strake sail, and so were driven.

And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship; And the third day we cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship. And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away”. When trouble came, the captain and his entire crew and all present used their understanding to bring solution but, instead of receiving solution, all hope that they should be saved was taken away.

This is exactly what happens to a man when he leans on his own understanding. They lose hope and give up and await death. But thank God, Apostle Paul trusted in God and went to him for a solution.  In Vs 21-25, the Bible says that “but after long abstinence, Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said sirs, you should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.

And now I exhort you to be of good cheer, for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship. For there stood by me this night an angel of God, whose I am and whom I serve, saying, fear not Paul; Thou must be brought before Caesar and Lo, God hath given thee. Wherefore sirs, be of good cheer: For I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me”.

Just like Paul, if you trust in the Lord, He will make your enemies to be your servant. No matter what you are going through, stand with God’s word, act upon it and you will enjoy his mercies and miracles for your life. God bless you and bless our great nation Nigeria.

Have you given your life to Jesus? If not, please pray this prayer. Father, I come to you as I am. I invite Jesus into my life to be my personal Lord and Saviour. Wash me cleansed with the blood of  Jesus and empower me with the power of your Holy Spirit. Thank you Father, for saving my soul and making me your child.
